Because they feared a blockade by the US Pacific fleet? Because they had territorial ambitions? Because they needed access to resources and materials, and had decided the best way to acquire them was by conquest? Because Japan's generals had a vision of Japanese supremacy?

Some? All? The root causes were complicated and multifaceted and, as the article indicates, probably depend greatly upon which "truth" you prefer to believe.
