Elon building out battery "gigafactories" has always been a double-edged sword. Yes, it let him reduce costs initially, but it also put him at risk of being behind the curve when battery technology improved.

The real question is whether or not they can be adapted to build newer cells... or are they just destined to become an extremely expensive stone hanging from Elon's neck?
