First, the world doesn't revolve around GDP growth and, second, unrestricted growth isn't sustainable.
Third, a better metric would be to measure whether or not the average citizen is happy and safe.
And, oddly enough, those places also tend to be those with a higher percentage of gross GDP devoted towards maintaining the commons and the public safety net.
