Having watched a few videos where actual astronauts were laughing at the film--and based on my own knowledge of the subject--I suspect that they did indeed consult with NASA... and then ignored everything that they were told.
As for more memorable than The Martian, to each their own, I suppose. Personally, I prefer how The Martian illustrated how we can overcome our issues using knowledge and science, tackling and solving problems as they occur. Do enough of that, and you get to come home.
And for all of that, it was still human.
Gravity, on the other hand, was basically just spectacle, a lot of style spread over very little substance. It gets points for gorgeous CGI, but other than that, I rank it right next to Armageddon.
