I think lightning is perhaps the ultimate intermittent power source. Unless, perhaps one went for earthquake or volcano power.
Regardless, the magic words in the premise are "converter" and "storage". Batteries take time to charge and don't do so instantaneously.
And have you calculated how much storage it would take to power a city based on power that only appeared monthly... or seasonally? (Don't get a lot of lightning storms in the winter.)
