I would tend to disagree with that statement. Research labs across the world totally understand today's battery limitations.

Which is why we we're seeing advances in solid-state, sodium-ion, iron-air, lithium iron phosphate, and other technologies, all of which are intent on eliminating or at least drastically reducing the amount of rare earth elements and other expensive/scarce materials.

Some of these may not be suitable for transportation, but will work just fine for grid-storage and other places where size/weight is not so much of an issue.
