It would be nice, indeed, if you could design a device with a glass screen that can withstand a drop to concrete or gravel and come away without a scratch.
Unfortunately, we live in the real world where metals scratch and glass breaks on iPhones and Galaxies alike and I’m not sure what you could do to solve the problem except encase every phone from the factory in 1/4" worth of hard foam front and back.
Even then, I’m sure I’d hear people complaining about scratched and gouged foam and plastic cases and how they no longer fit into their pockets and about how they have to take them back to the Apple store to have the foam or plastic replaced.
Or about how the easily damaged and scratched case is yet another exercise in “planned obsolescence”.
So, since we seem to be lacking the aforementioned magical indestructible materials demanded by the article, it appears that our best option is to make the phone as sturdy as we can given today’s technology and let each user figure out just how much protection they need..
