One can debate whether the Chernobyl death rate is high or low... but there is the small matter of an 1,000 square mile piece of property that's now uninhabitable.
And had things rolled just a bit differently and had the core reached the water table, we could well have been discussing hundreds of thousands of square miles.
And a much higher death toll.
So forgive me when I question "safety" numbers that are largely based on luck...
