The linked editorial primarily states the difficulty in finding conclusive results, especially when in social settings where some idiot ignore said advice.

In a way, it's much like measles vaccination. If everyone does it then it's almost impossible for the virus to spread. Reduce the number of vaccinations, however, and the number of vectors increases dramatically.

But since masks have a tiny benefit, please feel free to tell your doctor that he doesn't need to bother during your next surgery...
