They could have succeeded, easily, were it not for two things.

1) The Electorial College ballots were secured in time to prevent their destruction.

2) Pence insisted on staying and resisted being evacuated to a secure location.

As such he was on hand to certify the ballots, the counts, and the election.

If election hadn't have been certified then we'd have been facing calls for re-certifications and re-elections and all sorts of shenanigans designed to "protect" the election.

From my perspective, it was far, far closer than anyone is prepared to admit....
