This argument rests on outdated and reductionist assumptions about human nature and ignores the complexity of modern human relationships and societies.

Gender equality and personal mate preferences can coexist, and the suggestion that women are bound by a “natural” hypergamy that conflicts with happiness is not supported by evidence.

Where it might once have been about status, modern women usually don't key off a single characteristic. Some might want status, but others might value intelligence, or humor, or any of a thousand other things.

Instead of assuming that trade-offs must be made between happiness and equality, a more nuanced view recognizes that individuals are capable of pursuing fulfilling lives in diverse and evolving social contexts.

But I don't expect this argument to sway things. In a classic example of confirmation bias, you've found the excuse that proves, "It's not your fault".
