Usually when people discuss fuel cells they're discussing hydrogen, especially when nothing else is given to indicate otherwise.
But you can still take most of what I said about hydrogen fuel cells and apply it to methanol. Still need the fuel cell (with even more platinum), fuel tank, motors, and you still need a relatively large battery.
Still a major lack of infrastructure to support manufacture at scale and distribute it as needed.
And, as I recall, the catalyzed reaction also generates CO2, which is one of things we're trying to avoid.
